What is SmartMusic?

SmartMusic is a practice tool that I offer to my students.
You can read the Overview on the SmartMusic Web site, but to me SmartMusic is the following:

  • A way to help my students with rhythms, pitches and ensemble.
  • A fun practice tool. You can slow it down when you are first learning to play along with just the solo line. Once the notes are learned, you can speed up and play along with an accompanist.
  • A great way to work with an accompaniment or ensemble without having more rehearsals.
  • It is a great tool to help gain confidence.
  • It allows me to put custom practice items in for assignments.

NOTE: Be sure you have the operating system to run this before you buy a subscription, please.

This tool has many features that my students can and should take advantage of. Here are just a few:

  • Check your practice and play your Suzuki, Suzuki books, Jazz Improv, symphony and string orchestra stuff, Essential Elements and more with or without accompanimentPractice along with someone (or something) at any speed without changing the pitch
  • Record practice sessions and listen to how you did!
  • Upload MP3s of other music that play along with at any speed
  • Exercises in rhythm
  • Practice with a metronome without even realizing it!

SmartMusic Cost

Get Custom Assignments

I do not assign a lot of custom assignments, as those usually have to have a due date, student enrollment, etc. I ask students to practice specific things in SmartMusic at their lesson. If you have trouble finding anything just shoot me a note. I will send you the information you need. Here is the information, in the event that I do assign something through SmartMusic.

  1. Open SmartMusic once it is installed.
  2. Click Assignments.
  3. Click the Enroll for Class button.
  4. Be sure to select the class that I have sent to you as your enrollment class. Once you have enrolled, I will need to confirm before you can get to the music. I try to do this regularly, but, if you e-mail me to let me know, I will do as soon as possible.

  1. I don’t see CreasonStudios listed as a school. You have to put in my zip code to select me. That zip is 53158.
  2. Do I have to be under CreasonStudios? No. But if you want access to anything I post that is not on SmartMusic, you have to be one of my students and enrolled in a class.
  3. Do I have to be online to use it? No. You need to be online to get updates, assignments, or other items, however, once you have it installed, many of the files you need are already on the computer.
  4. What “class” am I enrolling for? These are not really classes, but since they have this set up this way, this is how we work with it. For ensemble stuff (whether participating or not), you can just click on ensemble. I have some specialty classes that you will not be enrolled in, so don’t be confused by what is there. If you try to enroll in something that you shouldn’t, the most that will happen, is that I decline it =)
  5. How do I find music? When you open SmartMusic, select Find music and then click on Music library to view all the files available to you. I like the Method books and exercises portion as well.
  6. Should I buy more than one subscription for each child? You don’t have to. This is not actually a class. If I ask them to record something, just label the recording so I know who’s is who’s. If you think both children will want to use it at the same time for different things, I believe it will run on more than one computer in your house separately.
  7. What if something I am playing is not listed in the library? Well, here is the downside. I can try to put things in the system for you that you are working on, but my time is limited to just performance pieces that I can get to. However, there are enough things in here to keep you happy for quite some time. I want this tool to be useful for you, so if there is NOTHING in here you need, I will make sure there is =). It has all the Suzuki books, Jazz Improv, symphony and string orchestra stuff, Essential Elements and more.
  8. What about the group music? Sign up for the Ensemble/Group music if you would like to practice any of the Creasonstudios group music (even if you are not performing). Whatever I arrange or write will be in there.

I do have to set up new classes every year, so this will need to be done again, annually.
Just remember that I can help you with any of this at your lesson. I highly recommend this tool for any of you that would like to have another form to practice with.
